Introduction to IGA in LS-DYNA

Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) is a finite element technology in which the geometry description (i.e. shape functions) used in computer-aided design (CAD) is also used in the numerical analysis. Besides the potential to better integrate the CAD models with the subsequent finite element analysis (FEA), the use of higher-order and higher-continuity shape functions, e.g. Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS), may yield better results while having the possibility of using larger element sizes. Furthermore, the use of the IGA technology helps reducing the discretization error that may result from a re-parameterization of the CAD geometry.

This webinar from March 2024 contains updated and extended training material from our two previous IGA webinars. It is divided into two parts:

Part I

    • General introduction to Isogeometric Analysis
    • Theoretical basics of B-Splines, NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) and refinement strategies
    • Theoretical background of analysis with NURBS
    • Isogeometric Analysis in LS-DYNA and LS-PrePost
    • LS-PrePost tutorials for simple shell and solid models (including the tensile test from https://www.dynaexamples.com/iga/tensile-test)

Part II

      • Industrial B-Rep CAD models
      • The new CAD-inspired *IGA keyword format
      • IGA on industrial shell models: analysis capabilities and examples
